In life, and in business, there are moments when you feel like a genius and moments when you feel like a miserable failure.  I’ve been self-employed for 10 years and working with the self-employed for over 20.  Trust me, everyone struggles at times.  The ones that succeed have two things in common; passion and determination to keep moving forward, and the people that help you soar high.

Consider a paper airplane…..In order to fly a paper airplane, you must first make the paper airplane.  Anyone can complete this task.  Just Google it!  In the same way, anyone can start a business!  Legal Zoom can make that happen in less than 15 minutes.  This is the easy part.

Once you have your paper airplane perfectly constructed you need to make it move.  This is done with the help of two powerful forces…THRUST and LIFT

  1. THRUST creates forward movement.   In a regular airplane, the thrust comes from the engine.  In a paper airplane, thrust comes from you!

Owning a business requires the power to dig deep and move forward.  The truth is that no matter how hard you throw the paper airplane, it will eventually glide to the ground.  Pick it up and throw it again.  The only way to keep it moving is to deliberately move it.  For that, you need passion and determination!

2. LIFT will get the plane soaring high.  Just as with a regular airplane, the wings bring the lift so you’re not just moving forward, your moving upward.  Without the wings, a plane wouldn’t get very far off the ground.

The wings of your small business are your people.   High-flying small business owners have a team of people dedicated to their success.  Your team is your employees, advisors, friends and family.   Lean on and appreciate your people, they are your lift.

Forward and upward movement require your effort combined with the effort of those who can take you sky high.  Now get out there and fly your paper airplane!
